4x4 upgrade

Sometimes we get a vehicle that comes in for one thing, and leaves with another.

What started out as a simple repair, turned into a complete overhaul of the duct system and a whole new lease of life with battery storage.

Day one

This 2022 Ford Ranger came to us from

4x4 Generators Limited.

An ASGB build originally, it came in for a flap removal and duct clear out due to overheating.

No room to move

Space was restricted due to the silencer and flap mechanism which created the overheating problem as the air path through the radiator and out of the vehicle was being obstructed.

Plan view

Good to go

With gaps in the build around the duct, exhaust air was able to recirculate around the duct.

We removed the flap and silencer and then replaced the air duct leading to no more overheating issues.

Conclusion

The generator can now run as a hybrid and enables low loads to run generator free for long periods of time.  Thanks to the LiFePO4 batteries, their generator is more fuel efficient and has lower emissions.

Investigations

The customer had previously complained that the generator built by ASGB had problems with overheating.

Alternative view

Poor build quality

The silencer itself wasn't attached and was leaking hot air into the engine bay contributing to the overheating problem. This would have been detrimental to the life of the air filter as it would have been susceptible to diesel fumes.

Pipe not connected

Future proof

The customer was aware of the advancements in technology that we'd included in other builds and asked us to fit batteries and an inverter to provide a hybrid solution for light loading.
